How Deep Stump Grinding Goes Below Grade in Cape Coral

A standard grind takes the stump 6 to 12 inches below the lawn, enough for sod or seed. A new tree, a patio or a footing over the spot needs 16 inches or more, and we set the depth when we quote.

The short answer

Standard grinding depth below grade

Standard grinding can take a stump 6 to 12 inches below grade, under the lawn rather than level with it.

That is what "below grade" means: under the soil line, not cut flush with it. On a standard job the wheel goes down 8 to 12 inches and follows the major surface roots 3 to 5 feet out from the center of the stump. The finer, deeper roots stay in the ground and break down on their own over 3 to 5 years.

When you call, tell us what is going over the spot. Grass needs the standard depth; a new tree or a slab needs more, and we quote whichever it is before we start.

Grinding below the root collar

Grinding below the root collar takes out the stump's growth center, and that is what stops new shoots coming back. The "root collar" is the base of the stump where the trunk widens into the roots, and the depth only works if the wheel gets under it.

Cut flush with the lawn

The top of the stump is gone, but the root collar is still sitting in the ground. The growth center survives, so new shoots can push up around the old edge.

How we grind

Ground below the root collar

The wheel goes 6 to 8 inches or more below ground and takes the collar out with the stump. With the growth center gone, the tree has nothing to regrow from.

Some aggressive species can still send up a few shoots from the lateral roots that run out past the ground area, and those need a follow-up.

Plan for what goes in

Depth for sod, new trees and paving

Sod and seed can take over at the standard depth, while a new tree, a patio, a driveway or a footing over the spot may need 16 inches or more.

Match the grinding depth to what goes over the spot afterwards:

Over the spotDepth below gradeWhy that depth
Sod or seed6 to 12 inchesThe standard depth leaves room for sod or reseeding to establish over the site.
A new tree in the same spot16 inches or more, up to 24"Deep grinding" as far as 24 inches leaves enough soil depth to replant a tree where the old one stood.
A patio, driveway or footing16 inches or moreA "construction-ready sub-grade" lets base material go straight over the ground stump.

Every stump grinding job we quote gets the depth its spot needs:

When buried lines limit depth

Where a buried line runs under the stump, we grind only shallow over it, to protect the line and our crew.

Gas, electric and water lines are marked before any grinding through the "811 utility locate", the free call-before-you-dig step that runs through Sunshine 811 in Florida. The cutting wheel works below the lawn, right where a line can sit, so when a mark runs under the stump the wheel stays above it.

That is the one case where we will not take a stump to the depth you asked for, and we tell you when we quote.

What a shallow grind over a line means for your yard:

  • The stump still goes below the surface, just not as far
  • Part of the root collar can stay, so a few shoots may come back
  • Deep grinding for a new tree or a slab is off the table over the line

What depth changes afterwards

Depth decides what grows or gets built over the spot, and how much the filled hole settles later.

At the standard depth there is room for sod or seed to take over the site, and the lawn closes up over it. Deeper grinding leaves enough soil for a new tree in the same spot, or room for base material under a patio, a driveway or a footing.

Settling comes from the fill. The "chip-and-soil backfill" we rake back into the hole breaks down as the chips rot, so a deeper hole holds more of it and sinks further. A top-up of topsoil levels it again.

Does deeper grinding cost more?

Yes, grinding deeper than the standard 6 to 12 inches can add to the price, so a stump ground out for a new tree or a slab costs more than one ground for grass. We quote the depth with the rest of the job, before we start.

Depth is one of the things that sets the price:
