What we do

Stump grinding in Cape Coral

Sanibel Stump Grinders grinds tree stumps and the surface roots around them below grade for homes and businesses in Cape Coral, then cleans up the spot before we leave.

"Grinding below grade" means the stump ends up under the dirt line rather than cut flush with it, so grass, sod or a new planting can go straight over the top. The job runs the same way every time:

  • We look at the stump's size and the way in, then quote the whole job on the spot
  • The grinder shaves the stump to mulch below grade, surface roots included
  • The chips go back in the hole or get hauled off, and the area is left ready to replant

Every stump job

Our stump grinding services

We grind single stumps, whole yards of them, big hardwood stumps and surface roots, and when the roots themselves have to come out we remove the stump whole. Grinding takes the visible stump and the root mass at the surface; the deeper roots stay in the ground and break down on their own.

  • Tracked stump grinder clearing a stump from a grass strip beside a parking lot kerb

    Commercial stump grinding

Stumps cleared from business properties, where a leftover stump is a tripping hazard that injures people and leaves the owner open to a liability claim.

  • Large production stump grinder working a very wide oak stump on a lawn

    Large stump grinding

Big stumps get a production-size grinder and more passes: the wider the stump, the harder the job grows, and the machine has to match it.

  • surface root grinding around a stump

    Surface root grinding

We chase the roots that run along the top of the ground and grind each one two to four inches below grade, so the mower clears and the lawn sits flat.

  • palm stump grinding

    Palm stump grinding

A palm stump can be ground out like any other stump, and when Ganoderma butt rot killed the palm, grinding removes the wood the fungus lives on, as UF/IFAS Extension advises.

  • Mini excavator lifting a whole root ball clear of its hole in a back lawn

Stump removal when the roots must go

When a new tree, a slab or a pool needs the spot, we dig out the root ball as well as the stump instead of grinding it.

How a job runs

How we grind a stump in Cape Coral

A stump grinding job in Cape Coral runs in four steps: we look at the stump and the access and quote it, the buried lines get marked, we grind the stump below grade, and we clean up.

  1. Look and quote

We check the stump's width, the wood and how we get a machine to it, then quote the whole job before anything starts.

  2. Lines marked

Buried gas, electric and water lines are marked through 811 before the grinder goes anywhere near the stump.

  3. Grind below grade

The stump gets a fresh low cut if it needs one, then the wheel shaves it down below the lawn until the depth and the area are reached.

  4. Clean up

The chips go back in the hole or onto the truck, the debris is cleared, and the spot is left ready for grass or a new planting.

The machines

Stump grinder equipment for gates and open yards

A stump grinder shreds the stump with a fast-turning cutting wheel fitted with carbide teeth, and we run grinders from compact to production size so the machine fits both the stump and the yard.

Self-propelled wheeled stump grinder parked at a stump on an open flat lawn

Wheel grinder for open, flat lots

The standard machine for flat lots and most residential stumps. It drives itself to the stump, so nothing backs across the lawn to reach it.

Large tracked stump grinder on rubber tracks set against a huge hardwood stump

Large grinders for big hardwood

Production-size and higher-speed machines for wide oak and other dense stumps that resist the teeth, on rubber tracks that spread the weight and spare the turf.

Compact tracked stump grinder squeezing through a narrow wooden backyard gate

Compact tracked grinder for tight access

Fits through a standard 36-inch gate, so it reaches a fenced backyard that full-size equipment cannot enter and grinds close to fences, patios, driveways and flower beds with little disturbance.

Utility locate flags and painted lines on a front lawn beside a cut stump

Before the wheel turns

Buried utility lines marked first

Buried gas, electric and water lines are marked through 811 before any grinding, because the cutting wheel runs below the lawn, right where an unseen line sits in its path.

The "811 utility locate" is the free call-before-you-dig step: in Florida it runs through Sunshine 811, and the utility companies come out and mark their lines at no cost. We do not put a wheel in the ground until that is done, and we plan the grinding around the marks.

After the grinding

Wood chips and cleanup

The chips are raked back into the hole or hauled away, and the work area is cleaned up before we leave.

Grinding leaves a mound of wood chips. Raking the pile back in as "chip-and-soil backfill" leaves a level spot that is ready for sod or seed, and taking the pile away instead is an added line on the quote that we name before we start. While the wheel is turning it throws chips and anything caught in the stump, so we protect windows and anything close by and wear our own protection too.

What it costs

How we price a stump job

The width of the stump sets most of the price, and the exact figure comes from the call.

We do not publish a rate card, because the stump's diameter alone does not tell us the whole job. These are the things that move a quote up or down:

  • Stump diameter. The "stump diameter", measured across the widest part at ground level, is the biggest driver by far. Difficulty climbs faster than the width does, so a wide stump takes more passes and more time.
  • Access. An open front lawn takes the standard machine; a gate-only backyard takes the compact grinder.
  • The wood. Dense hardwood resists the teeth longer than soft wood or palm.
  • How many stumps. Several stumps in a single visit cost less each, because the travel and the setup are the biggest fixed costs.
  • Chip haul-off. Chips left on site as fill or mulch are part of the job; hauling the pile away is an added line.

Call with the number of stumps and a rough width across the widest part at ground level, and we quote the whole job before we start, with no surprise charges after.

More about stumps and grinding

Each question below has its own page, from what grinding costs to what to do with the hole afterward.

What sets the stump grinding price

Grinding is priced mostly by the stump's diameter, with access, the wood and the number of stumps moving the figure up or down.

    Grinding or removal

Grinding suits most yards, and full removal is for a spot where the roots themselves have to come out.

    Stump Grinding vs Removal
  • Fresh ground-out stump pit showing its depth below the surrounding turf

    Grinding depth below grade

A stump can be ground six to twelve inches below grade, and deeper when a new tree or paving is going in the same spot.

    Stump Grinding Depth
  • Lateral roots spreading out through a lawn from a ground-out stump

    Roots left after grinding

The deeper roots stay in the soil and can take several years to decay on their own.

    Stump Roots After Grinding
  • Old decaying hardwood stump with hollowed, crumbling wood near a stucco house wall

    Stumps and termites

A decaying stump can draw termites and other wood-boring insects toward the house, which is a good reason not to leave it.

    Stump Termites
  • Square of fresh sod laid over a filled stump hole in a front lawn

    Filling the hole after grinding

The hole is filled with the chips or with topsoil, then seeded or sodded so the grass grows back over it.
