Stump Grinding Cost in Cape Coral and What Moves the Price

A stump is priced mostly by how wide it is at ground level, then by the wood, the way in and how many you have. Here is what moves the figure; the exact price for your yard comes free on the call.

What stump grinding costs

Stump grinding in Cape Coral can typically run $78 to $137 a stump, priced one stump at a time and mostly by its diameter.

The higher range beside it adds the cost of materials to the labor, so read the two as the bottom and the top of the market. Between them, the stump itself decides where yours lands: a small soft stump in an open front lawn sits at the low end, and a wide hardwood stump behind a gate climbs toward the top.

These are typical ranges for the area, not our quote. Tell us the width and the way in, and we price your stump before any work starts.

How a quote is built

Per-inch and per-stump pricing

Most quotes start from the stump's width at ground level, priced either by the inch or in bands by diameter, on top of a flat minimum for the visit.

Width drives it because a wider stump needs more passes, more time on the machine and more chips to deal with. A banded quote steps up with the stump like this:

  1. Up to 12 in
  2. 13 to 24 in
  3. 25 to 36 in
  4. 37 to 48 in
  5. 49 in and larger

A per-inch quote does the same thing a different way: the rate for each inch rises as the stump passes 30, 45 and 60 inches. Either way, a flat minimum covers bringing the grinder out and setting it up, whatever the stump's size.

Measuring for the call: go across the widest part at ground level, root flare included.

Up or down

Diameter, wood, age and access

Diameter moves the price most, then how hard the wood is, how old the stump is, how we get the machine to it and what sits close by. These are the six things we look at:

  • Diameter

The width at ground level sets most of the price, since every extra inch means more passes with the cutting wheel.

  • Hardwood

Dense hardwood like oak or hickory resists the teeth and takes longer than a soft wood like pine of the same width.

  • Age

An old, partly rotted stump grinds faster and costs less than a freshly cut green one that is still dense and full of moisture.

  • Access

An open yard takes a full-size grinder; a narrow gate means a compact grinder, which adds time and cost.

  • Structures

A stump against a fence, beside a foundation or on a slope needs more maneuvering or a smaller, slower machine.

  • Utilities

Buried lines near the stump are part of the price too, and they get marked first through 811 Before You Dig.

More than one stump

Several stumps in one visit

Grinding several stumps in one visit lowers the price of each one, because the travel and the setup are paid once instead of per stump. Volume pricing across the trade usually runs like this:

  • 10 to 15%

    2 to 5 stumps

Roughly that much off each stump when a handful are ground on the same visit.

  • 15 to 25%

    6 or more stumps

A bigger cut per stump for a yard full of them, such as storm cleanup or a cleared lot.

  • 30 to 50%

    Travel and setup

They are the biggest fixed costs, so sharing them can drop the per-stump price by roughly that much.

Count every stump in the yard before you call, so the whole lot goes on one quote.

On top of the grinding

Chip haul-off, topsoil and surface roots

Hauling the chips away, filling the hole with topsoil, seeding or sodding, and grinding surface roots are all priced on top of the grinding itself.

Grinding leaves a mound of wood chips. Raked back into the hole as fill, they are part of the job; taking the pile away is an added line. The add-ons that raise the total:

  • Chip haul-off, when you want the pile gone rather than used as fill or mulch
  • Topsoil to fill and level the hole
  • Seed over the filled spot so the grass comes back
  • Sod laid over the top for a finished lawn straight away
  • Surface roots ground down across the lawn, typically 3 to 5 feet out from the stump

Every add-on named up front

Do it yourself?

Renting a grinder or hiring the job

A rented grinder can cost a full day's rental before towing and safety gear, rarely grinds deeper than 4 to 6 inches, and is dangerous for anyone not trained on it. Side by side, the two look like this:

Renting a stump grinder

  • CostA day's rental plus fuel, with towing, safety gear and your own labor on top.
  • DepthConsumer machines rarely reach past 4 to 6 inches, too shallow to stop regrowth in most species.
  • SafetyThe machines are hard to manage and dangerous without proper training.
  • CleanupThe chip pile and the hole are yours to deal with.

Is grinding cheaper than removal?

Grinding costs less: full removal can run 2 to 4 times the price, because digging out the stump and its roots takes heavier equipment, more labor and more cleanup.
